Gangi is a small medieval village in the Sicilian hinterland characterised by narrow alleys and breathtaking landscapes which in 2014 obtained the recognition of “Most Beautiful Village in Italy.
Many folk and religious events attract tourists and pilgrims to Gangi each year. Among the most renowned folk events are the Ear Festival, Memories and Traditions, and the White Night. Among the most famous religious celebrations, which attract numerous faithful, are Palm Sunday and the Feast of the Holy Spirit.
Also famous are the historical/religious reenactments set in the village which are: “Vivere in Assisi” an event that takes place every two years in which it is possible to immerse yourself in 13th-century Assisi and relive the life of Saint Francis and the “Presepe Vivente” which recalls the birth of Jesus.
In both events, sets are set up that reproduce glimpses of daily life from past eras, and the itinerant and guided tour will immerse you and bring you back to life in another era.
Gangi is also a central place to visit the surrounding villages: it is 20 minutes from Petralia Soprana, 20 minutes from Geraci Siculo (the panoramic point “Il salto dei Ventimiglia” is famous), 20 minutes from Sperlinga (famous for its castle and for the rock village where some caves are now used as houses), 35 minutes from Nicosia, 37 minutes from Irosa motorway junction, 50 minutes from Piano Battaglia.
Suggested is the visit to the contemporary art museum "SottoSale", carved in an old salt mine. Located in the Raffo district of Petralia Sottana, 20 minutes out from Gangi. (Reservation required).
Gangi, being in the middle of sicily, is halfway between Palermo and Catania. It takes about 2 hours to reach either one. Closer the famous city of Cefalù (Distant 1 hour) and its beautiful sea.
